PEMRA approves FM Radio licence for SMIU
KARACHI: Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) has received FM Radio licence with frequency of 96.6 from Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA). Mohammad Pervaiz Rathore acting Chairman PEMRA handed over the licence to Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh Vice Chancellor SMIU. The Radio will be part of the Media Studies Department of SMIU and would train students as well working journalists in the skills related to broadcast journalism in addition to work for promotion of education in the country. Dr Shaikh thanked Pervaiz Rathore for approving FM Radio licence to the Alma Mater of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and said the test transmission of the radio would start from Ramzhan, while regular transmissions would start from August 14, 2014.
SMIU FM Radio will work for promotion of education in the country with spirit of patriotism. It will broadcast academic activities of Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, Education Departments of the provincial governments, different universities, colleges and other educational institutions. Dr Ali Shaikh said profiles and interviews of prominent scholars, academicians, philosophers, poets and other related persons of the country would be broadcasted. He said the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah would be strengthened through SMIU Radio on top priority. He said on the culture side, the SMIU FM Radio would broadcast lyrics of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Baba Bulleh Shah, Baba Farid, Allama Mohammad Iqbal, Asadullah Galib, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and others and set new trends in the field of broadcasting.
The Chairman of PEMRA hoped SMIU FM Radio would play such role in promotion of education in the country as Sindh Madressatul Islam has played since its inception. He hoped SMIU FM Radio would also set an example for other universities for quality broadcast. SMIU has already set up a most modern radio studio in its main campus, where highly qualified and experience personnel have been recruited.
